The speech-language pathologist assists patients who require treatment of communication problems: speaking; understanding; reading and writing. They also assess and treat swallowing problems with the goal of achieving safe eating.
- Speech-language pathologists at TOHRC provide clinical services to adults with a range of communication disorders affecting speech, language, voice, memory and thinking.
- Speech-language pathologists also help patients who have problems swallowing food and/or liquids.
The speech-pathology department works closely with other health-care professionals as part of the multidisciplinary team at TOHRC, including with the:
- Acquired Brain Injury Service
- ALS Clinic
- Neuromuscular Care Stream
- Locomotor Care Stream
- Neurospinal Service
- The Augmentative Communication and Writing Service provides interdisciplinary assessment and management to adults who are unable to achieve functional communication (speaking, writing). For those who qualify, ACWS offers solutions that may include alphabet/picture boards, voice output communication devices and computers.
Making an Appointment
As a service of TOHRC, Speech-Language Pathology accepts referrals from any of the physiatrists at TOHRC. Other physicians may also refer to TOHRC Speech-Language Pathology.
Education and Training
Our speech-language pathologists offer clinical placements to Speech-Language Pathology students in in-patient and out-patient rehabilitation programs.
Research
TOHRC Speech-Language Pathology has links with the University of Ottawa and welcomes the opportunity to collaborate with other facilities on research projects.
