Dr. Renate Ilse is Vice-President of Clinical Programs at The Ottawa Hospital. She provides operational leadership for Patient Flow, Emergency, Critical Care, Medical and Surgical Inpatient Services, Ophthalmology/Eye Care Centre, Pharmacy, Geriatric and Transitional Care, Ambulatory Care, The Rehabilitation Centre and a variety of regional programs (Geriatrics, Stroke, Base Hospital, Dialysis/Nephrology, Bariatrics and Trauma).

A recognized leader with more than 30 years of healthcare experience, Renate has held roles such as Chief Transition Officer during the St. Michael’s Hospital and Wellesley Central Hospital merger and Program Director of Perioperative Services at Rouge Valley Health System. She has also worked in the McMaster University Health Sciences Leadership and Management Program and the University of Toronto in various teaching roles. Her clinical and leadership experience is complemented by ten years as a management consultant/speaker, supporting health care leadership teams in change management and senior management team building.

Renate is a registered nurse with a doctorate in health-care administration (DHA) and a Master of Business Administration (MBA) in finance from the Rotman School of Management. She is also a Fellow of the American College of Healthcare Executives (FACHE) and a Certified Health Executive (CHE). Her research interests, as well as her published books and articles, are in the fields of interpersonal communication, evidence-based leadership and management and value-based health care.
