Dr. Kathleen Gartke, Senior Medical Officer

Dr. Kathleen Gartke is the Senior Medical Officer at TOH. She is an orthopaedic surgeon having practiced in Ottawa for 32 years after obtaining her fellowship in 1984. She specialized in problems of the foot and ankle in the early 1990’s. Her career began at The Grace Hospital, and she has been on staff at The Ottawa Hospital (TOH) for 22 years since amalgamation. In 2008 she took an academic position with the University of Ottawa becoming an Assistant Professor of Surgery in 2013. Her current research interests (with publications) include quality improvement, patient experience, physician leadership and physician wellness. Dr Gartke chairs the Medical Affairs Advisory Committee and co-chairs the Regional Clinical Operations Committee. She serves as Executive sponsor to several hospital committees in her areas of interest, and sits on advisory committees at the University. In 2016 Dr Gartke retired from clinical practice and has since devoted her time to hospital administration.

Dr. Gartke has been a member of the Federation of Medical Women of Canada (FMWC) for over 45 years. She has been president of the Ottawa Branch, and for 12 years served in various roles on the National Executive. This included President Elect, President (started the Pap Smear Campaign), Past President, Chair of Finance Committee and Treasurer. In 2021 she was awarded the May Cohen Award for embodiment of the federation’s vision.

Kathleen and her husband (also an orthopaedic surgeon) have two children – both “grown and flown”. Outside interests include a summer cottage on the Rideau Lakes where boating, fishing and reading are favorite pastimes.
