After completing his residency at the University of Toronto, Dr. Maberley undertook a retina fellowship at Queen’s University, where he also completed a Masters of Science in Community Health and Epidemiology. Following his training in Kingston, he studied macular disease and advanced retinal surgical techniques at Columbia University and the Manhattan Eye, Ear, and Throat Hospital in New York City.

Dr. Maberley performs research in population health and the medical and surgical management of macular disease, diabetic retinopathy, and high myopia. He has most recently co-led the Diabetic Retinopathy Goal Group of Diabetes Action Canada (a CIHR SPOR initiative), assisted in the development of the Preceyes Robotic Vitreo-retinal Surgical System (Technical University of Eindhoven) and in modelling blood flow through retinal microvascular pathologies (University of Amsterdam).

At UBC, Dr. Maberley assisted in establishing a number of new programs including: a big data analytics unit for ophthalmic pharmacoepidemiology, a Provincial vision rehabilitation unit, a multi sub-specialty ophthalmic clinic serving the under housed and homeless in Vancouver’s Downtown Eastside, the Provincial First Nations On-Reserve Mobile Teleophthalmology program, and the Advanced Retinal Imaging and Analysis Laboratory (in collaboration with scientists from Simon Fraser University).

Administratively, Dr. Maberley has served as a board member for the National Aboriginal Diabetes Association and the Canadian Ophthalmology Society. He has been retina section editor for the Canadian Journal of Ophthalmology and protocol reviewer for the US National Institute of Heath’s Diabetic Retinopathy Clinical Trials Network. In 2010, he led the formation of the Canadian Retina Society – which has since become the primary administrative and educational body for Canadian retina specialists. For 12 years he has also served as research director for the BC Provincial Health Services Authority’s Retinal Diseases Treatment Program.

Prior to coming to The Ottawa Hospital, Dr. Maberley was Head of the Department of Ophthalmology and Visual Sciences at the University of British Columbia, Head of Vancouver Acute Ophthalmology, and Regional Head of Ophthalmology for the Vancouver Coastal Health Authority.
