Message from the Co-Chairs of the Nursing Week Work Group

The Ottawa Hospital’s Nursing Week Work Group has chosen “Nursing: A Vibrant Profession” as the theme for Nursing Week, which takes place May 6 to 10. This theme is similar to that of the Ontario Nurses’ Association (ONA) and was chosen to celebrate the 40th anniversary of ONA’s creation.

We want to pay tribute to all our colleague nurse leaders in ONA who have worked diligently to represent the interests of RNs at The Ottawa Hospital (TOH). We also want to say thank you to all nurses for their excellent care and dedication to our patients. We all benefit from the nurses who represent our professional practice on multiple groups and committees, and there is no doubt in our minds that nursing is a vibrant profession at TOH.

During Nursing Week, many activities will be the same as in previous years, since we have been told that our nurses have appreciated them. These are the Nursing Skills Fair, Central Booth, children’s poster-drawing contest, volleyball tournament, coffee coupons, evening snacks and the luncheon.

One of the work group’s mandates is to select a community group to support, so we can show our compassion for the patients and families we care for every day. This year’s choice is The Well/La Source, for women and children, because the group requires donations of tangible items

Again, we support the National Florence Nightingale Gala organized by the Canadian Nurses Foundation (CNF). This event will be held at the Ottawa Convention Centre on May 2 to celebrate the end of the $4-million fundraising campaign. The role of the CNF as an organization is to provide nurses with financial support for education and research. This event is a fundraiser, and a number of generous sponsors have purchased tables on our behalf. We will be drawing at random among the clinical RNs and RPNs for some lucky nurses to attend this wonderful Gala.

We hope our nurses enjoy the Nursing Week activities and take time to appreciate their incredible contribution.

Thank you TOH nurses for all that you do! Best wishes to each of you from the Co-Chairs and all the Work Group members.
