November 28, 2012 – The Ottawa Hospital recently identified an increase in the number of kidney transplant patients with a type of pneumonia called Pneumocystis Pneumonia (PCP). PCP exposure rarely results in illness for people with strong immune systems; however those with weaker immunity, such as transplant patients, can develop lung infections. Due to the increase we’ve seen, we believe all of our kidney transplant patients have some risk of developing PCP.
The Ottawa Hospital strives to provide the highest quality of care possible. To reduce their risk of infection, we are recommending that these patients take a preventative antibiotic, as they did in the year following their transplant.
