Using homegrown technology, TARE is a minimally invasive treatment that leads to better patient outcomes and experience
OTTAWA – December 23, 2024 – Physicians at The Ottawa Hospital (TOH) recently performed Transarterial Radioembolization (TARE), a new cutting-edge treatment for patients with liver cancer. Using TheraSphere, homegrown technology produced in Ottawa by Boston Scientific, high-doses of radiation are injected into liver tumours via a catheter. This precision treatment decreases the size and impact of tumours, minimizes the effect on surrounding tissues, and leads to improved patient outcomes.
“By implementing TARE, we are broadening the scope of treatment options available at the hospital and ensuring that patients continue to get the most advanced care,” said Dr. Adnan Hadziomerovic, Interventional Radiology (IR) physician and Section Head. “The precise nature of the TARE procedure allows us to treat patients with liver cancer in a timely manner, while improving their overall experience in hospital.”
Depending on the stage of the cancer, TARE can treat tumours that otherwise could not be safely removed through surgery. It can also decrease the tumors’ size, so patients are eligible for surgery. In addition to improved patient outcomes, TARE is performed as an outpatient procedure, meaning patients can go home that day – leading to greater efficiency of hospital resources.
The Ottawa Hospital is always focused on enhancing patient outcomes through innovative solutions. Implementing TARE marks a significant leap forward in the fields of interventional radiology and nuclear medicine and will pave the way for new, advanced treatments for patients across the region.
