Province of Ontario announces planning grant for The Ottawa Hospital’s new campus

Thursday, July 4, 2019: The Ontario Ministry of Health announced a planning grant for the construction of The Ottawa Hospital’s new campus, marking an important next step in one of Ontario’s largest upcoming infrastructure projects.

The planning grant will allow the hospital to move to the next phase of planning the new health-care facility that will replace the aging Civic Campus. The new campus will be the location of eastern Ontario’s Regional Trauma Centre, and will be the centre for complex, specialized care for patients in Ottawa, eastern Ontario, western Quebec, and parts of Nunavut

“We are thankful for the continued excitement and interest around this project from our staff at the hospital, our government partners, and our community. As we move forward, we will continue to engage and to seek solutions that will allow us to build both a 21st-century hospital and a healthier community,” said Katherine Cotton, Chair of the Board of Governors of The Ottawa Hospital.

“Like the Civic before it, the new campus will be an essential part of our regional health system for generations,” said Dr. Jack Kitts, President and CEO of The Ottawa Hospital. “Our staff members provide world-class, compassionate care to patients and families every day; they make discoveries that change the face of medicine in Canada and around the world. Soon, they’ll build on this legacy in a 21st-century facility.”

There are five total planning stages in the Ministry of Health’s capital projects process. During the second stage, the hospital will develop the ‘functional program’ for the new campus. This builds on the work done earlier in the project and adds more detail about the programs that will be housed at the new campus, including space requirements, major equipment, and staffing.

At the same time, work will move forward in meeting the requirements for rezoning the site put forward by the City of Ottawa.

The Ottawa Hospital’s new campus will be located near the intersection of Carling Ave, and Preston St., bordered by Prince of Wales Drive and Maple Lane.
