More than “thank you” messages: The Ottawa Hospital goes beyond traditional job postings to offer nurses career support

The hospital’s nursing recruitment campaign aims to provide solutions to nurses questioning their future and their options in the field

OTTAWA – September 25, 2023 – As part of our ongoing recruitment efforts, The Ottawa Hospital (TOH) launched a multi-platform nursing recruitment campaign – going beyond traditional job postings – to help nurses who are questioning their future in the profession rediscover their love of the field.

TOH’s nursing recruitment campaign features Wild Poster ads, like the one below, in one location in Ottawa and two in Toronto, with the now crossed-out slogan Thank You Nurse Heroes. These billboards, along with a targeted digital ad campaign, direct nurses to call Opportunity Calls, a dedicated nursing recruitment phone line, or visit the website OpportunityCalls.ca.

Nurses will then hear more about pathways and opportunities available to them as they move throughout their careers. This includes learning about the different roles they can choose within the nursing field and hearing real-life stories from nurses currently working in those areas. This also includes informing nursing students about their options in the field post-graduation and engaging internationally trained nurses eager to work in Ontario, and how The Ottawa Hospital can help guide the process.

“As a nurse for over three decades, I know first-hand how challenging, yet rewarding, this career can be,” said Suzanne Madore, Chief Clinical Officer, and Chief Nursing Executive at The Ottawa Hospital. “This is why we’re investing in our future workforce by hiring more nurses, supporting our existing nursing staff, and ensuring the profession is in good hands.”

We know that nurses are tired, undervalued, and leaving the field at an alarming rate. They are done with the “thank you” messages and want real solutions for their problems in the field. In this campaign, we go beyond telling nurses what makes TOH different. We want to support them by showing them pathways and real-world examples of how they can make nursing work for them.

“Outreach is integral to engaging and supporting our current nursing workforce – and that is why we’re going beyond traditional job postings and using strategic ways to reach people where they are”, said Melanie Gruer, Chief Communications Officer at The Ottawa Hospital. “We want to help everyone who chose to go into nursing, whether they choose to work at TOH or elsewhere.”
