Psychiatric Emergency Services (PES) at the General and Civic Campuses

PES is a specialized service for assessing individuals deemed to be suffering from a psychiatric illness and who are in crisis.  Most individuals are referred from the Emergency physicians, although a protocol exists to ‘fast-track’ individuals known to TOH and who have no overriding medical problems.  PES is located within the Emergency Department at each of the Civic and General campuses.  The area dedicated for PES is a relatively small, secure unit that offers low stimulation and features to minimize risks to patients and staff (e.g. closed circuit TV, panic alarms).  Patients who are seen in PES are assessed by a multidisciplinary team and once each patient’s needs are determined, individuals requiring additional mental health services will be referred to the appropriate program as required:  Inpatient Services, Outpatient Services, Urgent Consultation Clinic, and other specialty clinics.
