If you have come to The Ottawa Hospital lately, you may have noticed an excitement in the air. On June 1, our hospital, and five other health-care organizations in Eastern Ontario launched the Epic digital health network. These health-care partners include:

• The Ottawa Hospital
• Hawkesbury and District General Hospital
• Renfrew Victoria Hospital
• St. Francis Memorial Hospital (in Barry’s Bay)
• The Ottawa Hospital Academic Family Health Team
• The University of Ottawa Heart Institute

Epic ushers in a new era of patient-centred care. It uses the latest technology to securely store, organize, and access patient records while maintaining patient privacy. Epic gives your care team the information they need at their fingertips.  In short, Epic brings your care into the digital age.

From the moment you arrive to the moment you are discharged, Epic will improve your experience and help our staff, and staff at five other health-care partners, provide seamless care to you.

Our staff has completed extensive online and in-class training to prepare for the launch of Epic. They have also practiced using Epic in a simulated environment, and much more. They will continue to receive at-the-elbow support from Super Users and other experts. Still, there will be a learning curve, which may cause some processes to take longer than normal.

As we continue to learn the new system, we may need to reschedule some appointments to ensure that our staff members are able to provide the best care possible. This is a good opportunity for patients to sign up for the new MyChart and put their name on the cancellation list. Information on how to sign up for MyChart is on The Ottawa Hospital’s website.

Patients can access their health records securely on their digital devices

Angie Hamson carried her son Charlie’s health information in a giant blue binder for years. Now through a secure, patient-centred application called MyChart, Angie and Charlie, and anyone else they choose, can see Charlie’s medical records digitally. Angie feels more empowered and Charlie can use a version of MyChart when he transitions to The Ottawa Hospital as an adult.
