Cancer-surgery wait times shorter: Ontario scorecard shows where The Ottawa Hospital performs well

The Ottawa Hospital ranks among the top five regional cancer centres in providing patients with timely access to surgery, according to an annual scorecard of Ontario’s cancer-care program.

The 2014 Cancer System Quality Index shows that more than eight out of 10 cancer patients in the Champlain health region get their surgery within provincial wait-time targets, even as the overall volume of cases continues to rise.

“Generally speaking, TOH performs well in the diagnosis, cure and control of cancer,” said Dr. Michael Fung Kee Fung, medical lead for surgical oncology.

Among Ontario’s 14 cancer centres, the Champlain region, for which The Ottawa Hospital is the care hub, is now:

  • First in getting gynecological cancer patients to surgery within target
  • First in breast-cancer detection
  • Third for patient satisfaction: 63 percent of patients are satisfied with their care; 90 percent said their symptoms were well managed
  • A top performer in end-of-life-care: highest share of cancer patients who receive a house call within the last four weeks of life and the lowest rate of cancer patients visiting the Emergency Department within the last two weeks of life.

The region also has the third-shortest wait time for radiation therapy.

“These achievements show that this region is able to provide the highest quality of care possible, even as the number of patients living with cancer continues to increase,” said Paula Doering, The Ottawa Hospital’s Vice-President of Clinical Programs and Vice-President of the Champlain Regional Cancer Program.

Cancer care has changed dramatically over the past decade. Surgeries have become less invasive, more services are being delivered in outpatient clinics and community care continues to expand.

“These advances are good news for patients,” said Dr. Fung Kee Fung. “But they also represent an opportunity for The Ottawa Hospital to rethink how it delivers services to provide high-quality care, while making every dollar count.”
