Social workers’ skills improve patient experience

Social workers such as Patricia Racine perform psychosocial assessments, provide crisis intervention, help patients and families navigate the health-care system, and connect them to community resources.

When patients and their families suddenly find themselves at TOH and feeling overwhelmed, social workers put their wide range of skills and practices to work.

“My husband and I truly appreciate your understanding of the wild situation we were so suddenly thrust into, and your tactful, professional, sensible approach,” wrote the wife of a surgery patient. “In just a few minutes, you left us knowledgeable, empowered and composed.”

Across TOH, social workers perform psychosocial assessments, provide crisis intervention, and help patients and their families navigate the health-care system. They also connect patients and families to the community resources needed for a smooth discharge and to help those coping with the problems that come with illness.

Social workers often receive appreciative letters from patients and families. Here are some more examples:

“You took care of me, while the rest of the emergency team took care of my husband,” said the wife of a stroke patient. “You made me feel like I was your only patient at the time. You were calm and clear while I was stressed and worried.”

Parents who lost their newborn wrote: “Thanks so much for everything you did. Your support was very comforting. You’ll always have a special place in our hearts.”

“I believe that we meet people for a reason,” said a mental health patient. “Thank you for making me realize that life is important.”

Please join the Social Work team March 3 to 7 to celebrate Social Work Week.
