Investing in tomorrow’s doctors

November 27, 2013 — Long before they take care of you and your loved ones at The Ottawa Hospital, doctors hone their skills through training at the uOttawa Skills and Simulation Centre (uOSSC) at The Ottawa Hospital.

Earlier today, The Ottawa Hospital Foundation celebrated an extraordinary gift from RBC – the gift of education – at the uOSSC.

The company invested $600,000 into the uOttawa Skills and Simulation Centre.

“We are so thrilled that RBC recognizes the value that the Skills and Simulation Centre brings to The Ottawa Hospital,” said Dr. Viren Naik, Director of the uOSSC. “By undergoing simulations in a hospital environment, our medical residents get to perfect those very skills that they will use on patients.”

Patients at The Ottawa Hospital benefit from some of the most highly trained and highly specialized health-care professionals in the world. The Skills and Simulation Centre is integral to training the best, attracting the best and keeping the best. From medical students learning new skills, to seasoned surgeons developing leading-edge techniques, the Skills and Simulation Centre is a crucial component of 21st century health care.

“RBC is proud of our longstanding commitment to TOH, and the great work they do to address not only today’s needs but to ensure we have the gold standard of health care for the future,” said Jeff Boyd, regional president, Ontario North and East, RBC.

“Like TOH, we recognize the power in helping build prosperous healthy communities for our families and friends, our colleagues and clients. This donation reflects RBC’s vision of embracing best-in-class innovative initiatives that invest in the teaching, training and ultimately the success of our people in the communities they serve,” continued Boyd.

“RBC has had a long history of philanthropy in this community, and has been a longtime generous supporter of our Hospital,” said Tim Kluke, President and CEO of The Ottawa Hospital Foundation. “The company recognizes that an investment in education strengthens our families, enriches our community and builds the intellectual capital we need to ensure the health and prosperity of our community.”

The Ottawa Hospital is a multi-campus, academic health sciences centre, serving 1.3 million residents of Ottawa and Eastern Ontario, both in English and French. It provides care for more patients than any other hospital in Canada and boasts specialty centres in cancer, heart, kidney and vision care, as well as rehabilitation services.
