Greg KnollWelcome to the Department of Medicine, an innovative academic health-care leader focused on advancing, developing and delivering cutting-edge medical research, and high-quality education – all of which are prerequisites to fulfilling our mission of unsurpassed excellence in patient care.

The Department of Medicine consists of physicians, scientists and support staff, many of whom are national and international leaders in their fields. All of our 400 plus physicians hold appointments with the Faculty of Medicine at the University of Ottawa. Through our 17 subspecialty divisions, our physicians provide a full scope of services including secondary and tertiary care, in both official languages, at all three campuses of The Ottawa Hospital as well as the Rehabilitation Centre, the University of Ottawa Heart Institute and Bruyère Continuing Care.

Our faculty, either as an admitting divisional physician or through a consultative service, provides the majority of inpatient care at The Ottawa Hospital. Consequently, we have been at the forefront of exceptional clinical undertakings such as a dedicated Thrombosis service, acute STEMI program, and pandemic planning. We have championed efficiencies in discharge planning and ER consult-decision time. We take great pride in providing unparalleled, comprehensive and innovative patient care.

As one of Canada’s leaders in research, the Department of Medicine is blazing new trails in both basic and clinical sciences with programs of international calibre and by capturing impressive national honours. Our strength comes from an uncommon and unwavering commitment by our leadership and research teams to champion and procures funding for innovative research programs. Members of the Department of Medicine held a remarkable 81% of all active Ottawa Hospital Research Institute funding.

The hallmark of education in the Department of Medicine is residency and fellowship training. Within both of these programs, our aim is not only to train superb physicians but also to mentor each individual to begin a career in medicine. In addition to our 17 accredited postgraduate programs, our department offers growth through professional development, mentorship, research and, practice in a wide variety of medical subspecialties.

We are proud to set the standard of accomplishment that places us among the best Departments of Medicine in the country and invite you to learn more about our Division’s faculty members, clinical activities, research and training programs at Ottawa Department Of Medicine(Opens in a new tab).
