Publicly funded physiotherapy programs
We offer publicly funded programs limited to internal referral sources from The Ottawa Hospital. Individuals do not pay for these services if they meet the criteria. These programs are covered by the provincial government. Eligibility criteria are for individuals in need of rehabilitation in acute stages of recovery. Treatment options vary depending on the referral service requested and potential funding options. Supplemental costs will be associated with splint and materials provision. Costs of splints and other goods are not covered by the Ontario Health Insurance Plan (OHIP) but may be covered by extended health care plans. Please inquire with us directly regarding eligibility, available funding or fees.
The following publicly funded programs are available at our clinic:
Episodes of Care
This is a time-limited, goal-oriented and self-management program. The physiotherapist will assess and treat the individual to improve, develop or rehabilitate physical function and mobility when these have been compromised by a debilitating event or disease, pain, injury or surgical procedure.
To be eligible for Episodes of Care, a person must – for each EOC – fall into at least one of the following categories:
- Is insured under the Ontario Health Insurance Plan (OHIP) and is 65 years of age or older.
- Is insured under the OHIP and is 19 years of age.
- Is insured under the OHIP and was discharged from a hospital after an overnight stay, and requires physiotherapy for the condition, illness or injury that occasioned the hospitalization.
- Is insured under the OHIP and is discharged from a hospital following outpatient/day surgery and requires physiotherapy for the condition, illness or injury that occasioned the procedure.
- Is approved for funding of services under the Ontario Disability Support Program (ODSP) or Ontario Works (OW) program.
- Be discharged from a hospital following outpatient/day surgery and requires physiotherapy for the condition, illness or injury.
Bundle of Care
Bundled care is a service delivery and funding model that is designed to promote greater integration in health care delivery, drive high-quality, efficient care and improve patient outcomes and experience after certain orthopedic surgeries. An “episode” is a short series of physiotherapy sessions focused on reaching functional goals after surgery (such as feeling safe and stable while climbing stairs).
To be eligible for Bundle of Care, a person must:
- Have a valid Ontario health card and undergone an elective (non urgent), primary (first replacement) hip, shoulder or knee replacement surgery at a qualifying Ontario hospital.
- Be within 6 weeks from surgery.
Outpatient hospital-based Care
Outpatient physiotherapy services are for persons in need of rehabilitation in acute stages of recovery. To be eligible for hospital-based care, the individual must be referred by an internal referral source at The Ottawa Hospital. This care may include treatment for conditions such as non-operative fractures.
Occupational therapy
Occupational therapy is available at the Riverside Campus of The Ottawa Hospital to clients with injury or disease to structures in the hand, wrist and/or forearm. Please refer to the Occupational Therapy Clinic – Riverside Campus website for more information.
