Chiropodists (ki-rop’ah-dists) are foot specialists.

Chiropodists and podiatrists are the only practitioners in Ontario who are exclusively trained and regulated by the province to provide foot health care and orthotics.  It takes 7-8 years of schooling before being licensed in Ontario.

The practice of Chiropody is the assessment of the foot and the treatment and prevention of diseases, disorders or dysfunctions of the foot by therapeutic, orthotic or palliative means.

A chiropodist is a regulated primary care provider.  According to the Chiropody Act 1991 authorized acts include:

1. Surgery in the tissues of the foot.
2. Injecting certain substances into the foot.
3. Prescribing certain medication.
4. Administering, by inhalation, certain substances.

What is the difference between a Chiropodist and Podiatrist?
Members of the College of Chiropodists of Ontario include both chiropodists and podiatrists.

Practitioners in Ontario that are classified as podiatrists have been educated outside of the country and opened their practice before the Chiropody Act came into existence in the province in 1991.   Podiatrists can provide a diagnosis and some of these practitioners are qualified to perform bony surgery.

Graduates in Ontario, and podiatrists new to the province are called chiropodists and practice under the scope of authorized acts listed above.
