Opportunity Mental Health Program – seeking a General Inpatient Psychiatrist Full-time Permanent Faculty Position
The Ottawa Hospital (TOH) Mental Health program is a Schedule 1 Facility under the Mental Health Act, which operates the following general psychiatry acute care programs and services at two campuses (Civic and General):
- Psychiatric Emergency Services
- Inpatient Service
- Outpatient Clinics (including Urgent Consult Clinic)
- Acute Partial Hospitalization
- Consultation Programs & Medical/Surgical Liaison Service
The Ottawa Hospital also provides specialized programs and/or services:
- Mobile Crisis Team & Community Crisis Stabilization Beds
- Champlain District First Episode Psychosis Program (regional program)
- Perinatal Mental Health Services
- Regional Program for the Treatment of Eating Disorder
- Substance Use Program
- Community Treatment Order Coordinator
Job duties
- Provide care to inpatients supplemented with some time in psychiatric emergency services with coverage to other areas as needed on a rotation schedule.
- Consults with other health care providers to devise a plan to manage other health issues or medications that may be impacting the patient’s mental status.
- Develops and implements treatment plans, including prescription of medications.
- Monitors and evaluates treatment results.
- Evaluates patients by interviewing patient, family, and other persons; observing behaviors; reviewing medical history and related documents; selecting, administering, and interpreting psychological tests; and ordering laboratory tests and evaluating results.
- Discuss progress toward goals with patients; providing instructions; monitoring effect of medications; and supervising staff provision of services.
- Maintains historical records by documenting symptoms, medications, and treatment events and writing summaries.
- Updates job knowledge by participating in continuing medical educational opportunities, reading professional publications, maintaining personal networks, and participating in professional organizations.
Required Education, Knowledge, Experience and Skills
- Expertise in and commitment to treatment of patients in a fast-paced acute general psychiatry academic setting.
- Eligible for licensure by the College of Physicians and Surgeons of Ontario.
- Holds or eligible for FRCPC designation in psychiatry.
- Meet criteria to apply for and receive appropriate medical staff privileges at The Ottawa Hospital.
- Meet criteria and receive an academic appointment at the University of Ottawa, Faculty of Medicine at the rank of Assistant Professor or higher.
- Theoretical knowledge of the care of the general medicine patient, and ability to apply this knowledge in a clinical setting.
- Demonstrated experience in assessing the patient’s needs.
- Demonstrated experience in participating as an active member of the health care team.
- Demonstrated experience in communicating effectively in an oral and written format with patients, public, colleagues and other health discipline.
- Identifies a strong interest in clinical research and publications that are well suited to our departmental and institutional strengths.
- Maintains extensive knowledge in psychopharmacology.
- Identifies a commitment to personal continuing education activities.
- Ability to communicate in a bilingual environment (French & English) is preferred.
Wage range: $250,000 – $400,000
Benefits
Successful applicants will work in a hospital privileges model. Remuneration is fee for service with alternate funding plan for academic work.
