Overview
The Microbiology Laboratory is a centralized service located at the General Campus of The Ottawa Hospital. Our aim is to provide excellent and timely diagnostic microbiology to support the care of patients of The Ottawa Hospital, and our affiliated community hospitals. Special relationships with the Division of Infectious Diseases and Infection Control and Prevention Service are valuable in allowing us to provide optimum service.
Our Services

A full range of routine and specialized services to diagnose and prevent bacterial and fungal infections are provided. A limited service to diagnose and prevent viral infections, especially in transplant patients, is also provided.
Educational programs to support undergraduate and postgraduate medicine, as well as undergraduate and postgraduate health science students of the University of Ottawa, are important components of the lab’s service. An affiliation with St. Lawrence College provides an opportunity for Medical Laboratory Technologists to complete their training, as well as a variety of Ottawa-based colleges.
The lab has focused its research into developing and evaluating new diagnostic methods to enhance patient care, and to further the understanding of antibiotic resistance.
Our Team
Physicians and doctoral scientists with special training in diagnostic microbiology work in conjunction with medical technologists and technicians to provide the patient-centred service.
