Senior Medical Officer
The Ottawa Hospital invites applications and nominations for the recruitment of a Senior
Medical Officer (“SMO”), effective November 1, 2025.
Reporting to the Chief of Staff, the SMO is a seasoned leader who provides strategic leadership
in ensuring the efficient and effective operation of medical affairs, patient relations, medical
staff human resources and medical functions across the hospital. The SMO is a key advisor to
the Chief of Staff and works with medical and executive leadership to ensure physician
alignment with operational strategies. The SMO demonstrates a meticulously ethical approach
to their responsibilities and the highest standards of excellence in professionalism and clinical
practice.
As an ideal candidate, you bring demonstrable experience in progressive leadership roles
acquired in large and complex healthcare environments. Your experience in the development,
implementation and evaluation of best practice, quality and safety initiatives is complimented
by strong medical and administrative leadership capability. Previous experience in medical
leadership in an academic health setting is an asset. A collaborator who can translate vision to
action, you deeply value engagement and bring proven ability to influence culture and drive
results through your outstanding interpersonal and negotiation skills. You are a credible,
respected and transparent physician leader with extensive experience facilitating successful
change and evolution in the provision of inclusive, innovative and person-centered care
delivery.

- Proven excellent communication, presentation, negotiation, change management,
conflict resolution, and consensus building skills. - Strong interpersonal skills and the ability to exert influence and achieve impact
internally with peers and staff, and externally with various hospitals, community service
providers, and universities. - Strategic planning, creativity, and innovative thinking skills.
- Flexibility, able to pivot as needed in a rapidly evolving environment.
- Ability to coach, mentor and teach others.
- Effective critical thinking, analytical, and problem-solving skills.
- Knowledge of financial issues and management.
- Understands and supports the academic and research environments.
Qualifications
- Excellent administrative and organizational skills
- Licensed, or eligible for licensure with the College of Physicians and Surgeons of Ontario
- Credentialled, or eligible for credentialling, at The Ottawa Hospital
- Experienced and capable leader with strong 2-way communication skills
- Bilingualism (French & English) is considered an asset
