Academic Trauma Rehabilitation Physiatrist

Position Summary

The Department of Medicine and the Division of Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation at the University of Ottawa and The Ottawa Hospital are looking for an academic Physiatrist with expertise in musculoskeletal and neurological trauma rehabilitation to join its dynamic team. This full-time position (1.0 FTE) offers the opportunity to work in both inpatient and outpatient settings, providing rehabilitation care to individuals with musculoskeletal and neurological trauma and pain.

Responsibilities

The successful candidate will be responsible for providing clinical care to patients with musculoskeletal and peripheral neurological trauma, managing both inpatient and outpatient caseloads. Outpatient clinics will include complex musculoskeletal, interventional pain, and peripheral nerve trauma/electromyography clinics.  The position will also include provision of acute care consultations for patients in need of rehabilitation after traumatic injuries.

They will join an established interdisciplinary team dedicated to delivering patient-centered rehabilitation care. In addition to clinical duties, the successful applicant will be expected to actively participate in teaching and mentoring medical students, residents, and fellows within the PM&R residency training program, which is highly regarded for its engaged faculty and robust feedback culture.

In this role, the Physiatrist will be expected to:

  • Provide direct patient care for MSK and neurological rehabilitation, interventional pain services, and electromyography in both inpatient and outpatient settings.
  • Provide acute care general and trauma rehabilitation consultations.
  • Participate in interdisciplinary care teams, collaborating with a variety of healthcare professionals.
  • Lead and contribute to the academic mission of the University of Ottawa, including research, education, and scholarly activities.
  • Participate in the Physiatry on-call rotation, covering both TOH and affiliated facilities as required.
  • Contribute to the ongoing development and enhancement of the inpatient and outpatient trauma rehabilitation, interventional pain, and post-SCI nerve transfer programs.

Qualifications

The ideal candidate will have a demonstrated background in trauma rehabilitation including the use of interventional techniques, with experience in both inpatient and outpatient care. They will also demonstrate background in EMG/peripheral nerve trauma and spinal injury-related nerve transfer consultations. Teaching experience with medical students, residents, and fellows is required, and the candidate must have strong organizational skills to effectively balance clinical duties, academic responsibilities, and research initiatives.

The successful candidate must hold an MD degree; be a member of, or be eligible to be a member of, the Canadian Medical Protective Association; have, or be eligible for certification in Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation by the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Canada; have, or be eligible for certification in Electrodiagnostic Medicine by the Canadian Society of Clinical Neurophysiologists; and have, or be eligible for, licensure in Ontario. Additional post-residency fellowship training in MSK and peripheral nerve trauma and interventional techniques will be an asset. The successful candidate will be eligible to hold an academic appointment at the rank of an Assistant Professor or higher at the University of Ottawa.  Academic rank will be commensurate with the candidate’s qualifications and experience.

The University of Ottawa and The Ottawa Hospital are bilingual institutions and therefore in the case of potentially successful candidates of equal ability, a bilingual (French/English) candidate would be preferred.

The Division of Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation at The Ottawa Rehabilitation Centre is renowned for delivery of outstanding care and recognized internationally for its programs, including Acquired Brain Injury, ALS, Amputee, Cerebral Palsy, Chronic Pain, , General Rehabilitation, Interventional MSK, Neuromuscular, Orthotics, Pediatric Transition, Post-Concussion, SCI, and Spasticity. Members of the Division have a wide range of clinical and basic science research skills. Their work includes cutting edge clinical trials, translational research, and epidemiology.  In addition to modern out-patient clinical units, The Ottawa Hospital Rehabilitation Centre has 70 inpatient rehabilitation beds, with consult services at both campuses of TOH and at Bruyère Health.

The income for this position is derived from a variety of sources including but not limited to clinical billings (fee-for-service), salary support (AFP) as well as honorariums/stipends.  Health and welfare benefits including extended health, dental and disability insurance as well as life insurance are offered to full-time physicians.
