Speech-Language Pathologists with Patient preparing for Fiberoptic Endoscopic Evaluation of Swallowing (FEES)

Speech-Language Pathologists (SLPs) assess and manage speech, language, voice, cognitive-communication, and swallowing disorders.  Working together with the patient, family and healthcare team, SLPs help make the patient’s return home as safe as possible. Assessments and recommendations always have the patient and family in mind, with the goal of helping to improve quality of life once patients leave TOH. SLP services are available in all inpatient settings at The Ottawa Hospital including the Civic Campus, the General Campus, the Heart Institute, the Ottawa Hospital Cancer Centre and The Ottawa Hospital Rehabilitation Centre.

Many SLPs at TOH are specifically trained and qualified to perform the following:

  • Videofluoroscopic swallow studies (VFSS)
  • Fiberoptic endoscopic evaluation of swallowing (FEES)
  • Management of tracheoesophageal voice prostheses following total laryngectomy

Inpatient Services at The Ottawa Hospital Rehabilitation Centre (TOHRC)

Speech-Language Pathology services are offered through the following inpatient care streams at TOHRC:

  • Acquired Brain Injury (ABI)
  • Locomotor care (including amputees, respiratory conditions, chronic pain and complex orthopedic conditions)
  • Neuromuscular care (including ALS, MS, CP and spinal cord injuries)
  • Short Term Rehabilitation
