We assess and treat patients who need intensive, short-term rehabilitation (three weeks or less).

The Short-Term Rehabilitation Unit (STRU) is an in-patient rehabilitation service.  Many patients are referred to the STRU after complex joint replacement surgery, back surgery, mild strokes or long illnesses that have reduced strength and mobility.

Therapy is tailored to each person’s needs and may include support for activities of daily living (such as dressing or preparing meals), instrumental activities (such as going grocery shopping), mobility, endurance, speech or memory.

The focus of the STRU is to help patients regain independence in daily life through intensive rehabilitation.

Team

Patients at the STRU are supported by a team of rehabilitation professionals. This team may include occupational therapists, physiotherapists, speech-language pathologists, rehabilitation assistants, nurses, social workers, family physicians and rehabilitation specialists. A clinical manager oversees care and coordination.

What to expect

Once you are referred to the STRU, a highly trained rehabilitation nurse clinician will assess you to determine if the unit can help you with your needs and your rehabilitation goals.  If so, the nurse will arrange for your transfer to the STRU as soon as a bed becomes available.

As a patient, you are an active member of your rehabilitation team. You’ll work with at least four specialists to help you reach your goals and prepare for community-based living.

You’ll be expected to:

Participate in all of your scheduled therapies.

Do as much of your personal care as possible.

Wear comfortable clothes and non-slip shoes.

Sign out when leaving the unit and sign in when you return.

Follow up with your family doctor after discharge.

Planning for discharge

Discharge planning begins early and is shaped by your goals and needs. Your care team will work with you, your family or support network, and community agencies to make sure you have the support you need after leaving the hospital. The goal is to help you return safely to community living.

Referrals

All patients must be referred by a physician or member of the medical team at an acute care unit of The Ottawa Hospital.
