Overview
We offer publicly funded physiotherapy programs for eligible patients referred internally from The Ottawa Hospital.
The Riverside Outpatient Rehabilitation Clinic helps patients recover from acute injuries, fractures or surgery affecting joints, muscles or bones. The goal is to reduce pain, improve movement and support a safe return to daily activities through personalized treatment and education.
Physiotherapy services focus on improving:
- Pain and swelling.
- Muscle strength.
- Joint mobility and range of motion.
- Balance and coordination.
- Overall physical function.
Treatment is tailored to your condition and recovery goals. Occupational therapy is also available at the clinic for hand, wrist and forearm conditions.
Eligibility and costs
Physiotherapy services at Riverside Outpatient Rehabilitation Clinic are publicly funded for eligible patients referred internally from The Ottawa Hospital. These services are covered by the provincial government. Splints and materials are not covered by OHIP but may be reimbursed through extended health plans.

Episodes of Care
This is a short-term program focused on helping you reach specific goals and manage your recovery. A physiotherapist will assess your condition and provide treatment to develop, improve or rehabilitate movement and physical function affected by illness, injury, pain or surgery.
Eligibility
Patients must meet one of the following criteria for each episode of care:
- Be insured under the Ontario Health Insurance Plan (OHIP) and 65 years of age or older.
- Be insured under the OHIP and 19 years of age.
- Be insured under the OHIP and discharged from a hospital after an overnight stay, and require physiotherapy for the condition, illness or injury that occasioned the hospitalization.
- Be insured under the OHIP and discharged from a hospital following outpatient/day surgery and require physiotherapy for the condition, illness or injury that occasioned the procedure.
- Be approved for funding of services under the Ontario Disability Support Program (ODSP) or Ontario Works (OW) program.
- Be discharged from a hospital following outpatient/day surgery and require physiotherapy for the condition, illness or injury.
Bundle of Care
Bundled care is a program that supports recovery after certain orthopedic surgeries. It includes a short series of physiotherapy sessions (bundles) focused on helping you reach specific goals, like feeling safe and steady on stairs. The program is designed to improve care, support recovery and make your experience smoother.
Eligibility
Patients must meet all of the following criteria:
- Have a valid Ontario health card.
- Have had an elective (non-urgent), primary (first) hip, shoulder or knee replacement surgery at a qualifying Ontario hospital.
- Be within six weeks of your surgery date.
Outpatient hospital-based care
Outpatient physiotherapy is for people who need rehabilitation during the early stages of recovery. This type of physiotherapy may help with conditions like non-surgical fractures or other acute physical challenges.
Referrals
All patients must be referred to the Physiotherapy Clinic by a physician. All referrals are processed in the order they are received and according to our priority criteria.
