Overview

Whether you are recovering from surgery, managing a chronic condition or preparing to return home after a hospital stay, physiotherapy can support your recovery.

Physiotherapy helps patients recover from illness, injury or surgery by improving movement, strength, breathing and overall physical function.

Treatment may focus on walking, balance, breathing, pain relief or building strength. Therapists also help prevent complications and reduce the risk of future injury.

Physiotherapy is available during your hospital stay and, in some cases, after discharge through outpatient clinics. Your care may include hands-on therapy, guided exercises, education and support with equipment or home programs. The goal is to help you regain function, improve comfort and safely transition back to daily life.

Not every patient in hospital will need physiotherapy. If your care team believes it may help, they will refer you for an assessment.

Inpatient services

If you are an inpatient referred to physiotherapy services, you can expect a caring team that will guide you through this process.

Assessment

A registered physiotherapist will review your medical history, current condition and personal goals. This helps create a treatment plan that’s tailored to your needs and focuses on improving your function, comfort and independence.

Treatment

Your physiotherapist will design a personalized treatment plan based on your goals. This may include exercises to improve movement, breathing, balance and strength, as well as pain management and equipment recommendations. You’ll work together to track progress and adjust your plan as needed.

Transition to the community

As you prepare to leave the hospital, your physiotherapy team will help you plan for life at home. This may include training with mobility aids, practicing daily tasks and connecting you with community services. You’ll receive a discharge plan to help maintain your progress after leaving the hospital.

Physiotherapy is available at the following locations to inpatients:

  • The Ottawa Hospital Rehabilitation Centre.
  • The Short-Term Therapy Unit.
  • The University of Ottawa Heart Institute.
  • Throughout the Civic and General campuses.
