Hemodialysis Program

Overview

Our team supports the needs of patients with kidney, fluid or electrolyte problems and those with end stage renal disease.

Hemodialysis is a treatment that filters and cleans the blood when the kidneys can no longer do this on their own. Most people receive hemodialysis three times a week, with each session lasting about four hours.

Hemodialysis is available 24 hours a day, 7 days a week at the Civic and General campuses. The Riverside Campus also has an outpatient hemodialysis unit.

More than 650 patients receive chronic hemodialysis at The Ottawa Hospital. Five satellite units in the region provide care closer to home for many patients.

Locations

Hemodialysis is provided at several sites so patients can receive care where it works best for them.

Civic Campus: (E6 Unit)

613-761-4946

Monday to Saturday 6:30 a.m. to 11:30 p.m.

General Campus: (AKU Unit)

613-737-8194

Monday to Saturday 6 a.m. to 11:30 p.m.

Riverside Campus: (RKU Unit, lower level)

613-738-8400 ext. 82221

Monday to Saturday 6:30 a.m. to 11:30 p.m.

Satellite units

Five satellite hemodialysis units in the region allow patients to access hemodialysis in the communities where they live. They provide the same level of care delivered in our main hospital units. These locations include:

  • Bruyère Continuing Care
  • Cornwall
  • Hawkesbury
  • Queensway Carleton Hospital
  • Winchester

Incentre nocturnal hemodialysis

The incentre nocturnal hemodialysis program offers hemodialysis overnight at the hospital. This option may help patients who benefit from longer dialysis sessions and prefer to have their days and weekends free from dialysis.

Research

Members of division of Nephrology are involved in research studies of newer and different types of hemodialysis care.

Interested in home dialysis?

Home peritoneal dialysis and home hemodialysis may provide more flexibility for some patients.
