Home Dialysis Program

Overview
The Home Dialysis Program at The Ottawa Hospital is one of the largest home dialysis programs in North America.
We provide assessment, training and ongoing support for people choosing home peritoneal dialysis or home hemodialysis. Many patients find that home dialysis gives them more flexibility and fewer restrictions than conventional dialysis. More than 220 patients receive dialysis at home with support from our team.
Types of home dialysis
Peritoneal dialysis
Peritoneal dialysis is the most common type of dialysis done at home. It uses the lining of the abdomen to filter the blood. A special fluid is infused into the abdomen through a soft catheter. This removes waste and extra fluid when the kidneys can no longer do this on their own.
Peritoneal dialysis is as effective as hemodialysis and can be done by the patient or a family member. The equipment is portable and can be used while travelling or spending time away from home.
Home hemodialysis
Home hemodialysis is done using a personal hemodialysis machine in the home. This option allows for treatment schedules that better meet a patient’s needs.
Some people choose to do dialysis overnight while they sleep. Others prefer shorter, more frequent treatments during the day. More frequent or longer dialysis sessions can improve blood pressure and support heart health.
Home dialysis can support your independence
Most patients have fewer dietary or fluid restrictions and make fewer trips to a hospital or clinic.
