Medical Assistance in Dying

Medical Assistance in Dying (MAiD) is a medical procedure.

It involves the administration of medications to intentionally and safely end the life of an adult patient who meets strict legal criteria, at the request of the patient.

Federal law governs who is eligible and the procedure under which a patient can receive it.

No health-care provider is required to provide or participate in MAiD, however, all health providers have professional responsibilities specific to their regulatory bodies. Please refer to your professional college guidelines to understand what your professional responsibilities entail.

The Champlin Regional MAiD Network is respectful of a health-care provider’s right to conscientiously refuse to participate in MAiD based on moral or religious beliefs. Physicians or nurse practitioners who object to MAiD will not be required to participates in the decisions or in the resulting actions. However, they must refer the patient to a physician or nurse practitioner who is able to participate based on recommendations from their governing college.
