In health care, you can’t always predict an emergency. But you can prepare for one — with the help of simulation.

And no, we’re not talking about dusting off that old Operation board game and bracing for its panic-inducing buzzers. 

Much like pilots train in flight simulators, The University of Ottawa Skills and Simulation Centre (uOSSC) offers state-of-the-art, simulation-based medical education for teams across the health-care spectrum, from medical residents and nursing students to physicians, nurses, paramedics and other health-care professionals. Through realistic training and education, participants can sharpen their skills, develop new procedures and techniques and improve patient safety.

Simulation education provides safe, hands-on training and experience in how to best care for patients. It uses a range of tools, like anatomically accurate models of body parts called part-task trainers, full-body manikins that breathe, have pulses and respond to treatments, and virtual reality trainers used to teach entire operations. (No red light-up noses or bread baskets here)

It’s real-world practice — without putting real patients at risk.

Training is available at uOSSC’s world-class simulation centre at The Ottawa Hospital (TOH), but we understand it’s not always practical to take an entire team offsite for training. That’s why we bring simulation education to teams across the health-care system with our Simulation Patient Safety Program (SPSP). This allows teams to practice ‘in-situ’ in their own familiar clinical setting with their own equipment, from hospitals to dental offices, community clinics and even correction facilities.
