Head of Department Family Practice

The Ottawa Hospital invites applications and nominations for the recruitment of a Head of Department, Family Practice. Reporting to the Chief of Staff, the Head of Department is a seasoned leader who can direct the effective delivery of clinical services, education, and research in alignment with the mission, vision, values, and strategic plan of The Ottawa Hospital.

As we continue with our Strategic Plan, by looking beyond ‘the patient in the hospital’ and also supporting ‘the person in the community’, the Department of Family Practice will continue to play a significant role in reshaping the future of health care for generations to come.

The Department of Family Practice is facing transformative growth in virtually every practice area, providing unique opportunities to develop new models of care and find new solutions to systemic problems, such as the shortage of comprehensive family physicians in Ottawa. The Ottawa Hospital is a founding member of the Ottawa Ontario Health Team, working closely with community partners to ensure people are healthy, well and supported to live in the community. The Department is closely affiliated with the University of Ottawa Department of Family Medicine residency program based in both the community and the hospital. Our partnership allows us to train medical students, residents, and other health-care professionals to the highest standard.

The Department of Family Practice is comprised of 75 family physicians who effectively deliver a wide range of vital services across many locations as clinicians, teachers, researchers, and administrators. Department members have diverse clinical practices including Primary Care, Maternal and Newborn Care, acute in-patient care, post-acute care, and many other areas of focus within The Ottawa Hospital. The Ottawa Hospital is also home to the TOH Academic Family Health Teams (at the Civic and Riverside campuses) which provide comprehensive care to patients across the region.

• Proven excellent communication, presentation, and interpersonal skills in negotiation,change management, conflict resolution, and consensus building.
• Strong interpersonal skills and the ability to exert influence and achieve impactinternally, with peers and staff, and externally with various hospitals, community serviceproviders, and university.
• Strategic planning, creativity, and innovative thinking skills.
• Ability to coach, mentor and teach others.
• Effective critical thinking, analytical, and problem-solving skills.
• Knowledge of financial issues and management.
• Understands and supports the academic and research environment.

Qualifications

• Excellent administrative and organizational skills
• An outstanding record in patient care
• Certification by the College of Family Physicians of Canada or an equivalent
• Eligible for licensure in Ontario
• Experienced and capable leader with strong 2-way communication skills
• Bilingual preferred
