Prevent Alcohol and Risk-related Trauma in Youth

Overview

The Prevent Alcohol and Risk-related Trauma in Youth (P.A.R.T.Y.) Program instills the importance of safe behaviour in young people through education.

The program is an educational initiative for high school students and new drivers 15-18 with a primary goal of decreasing preventable injuries by educating students about the importance of safe behaviour.

They will spend the day learning what it would be like to be in a car crash and are walked through the common course of injury and treatment after being a victim in that accident.

This in-hospital program teaches participants about the potential consequences of risky behaviours like impaired driving, speeding, aggression, stunt driving and other decisions that can lead to injury. Providing this type of education at a young age can foster positive behavioural changes throughout adulthood and result in safer driving practices, ultimately leading to a decrease in motor vehicle accidents and safer roads.

What to expect on a PARTY day

The day begins at 9 a.m. with a welcome for participants and an introduction to the concept of injury prevention. From there, students take part in a variety of activities from lectures and videos to a tour of the Emergency Department.

There, participants will meet with a team leader who will go through the daily routine in the trauma bay, and spend time with nurses, who will explain the equipment used during resuscitation and procedures involved. Students will also have the chance to meet an Ottawa paramedic who will discuss how injuries occur in car accidents and explain the Fatal 4, as well as meeting with a trauma survivor to understand the real-life impact of injuries.

After a pizza lunch, students will participate in a training session on the Stop the Bleed initiative, which certifies them in how to respond to a bleeding victim before first responders arrive.

The day ends at 2:30 pm with a review of the key points. Students will reflect on what they have learned, how they will approach situations differently in the future and challenged to make smarter choices going forward.
