Microbiology

Overview

The Microbiology laboratory is a centralized service that helps diagnose infections and supports care for patients at The Ottawa Hospital and our affiliated community hospitals.

We work closely with the Infection Prevention and Control team and the Division of Infectious Disease to provide the best possible service.

The lab is located at the General Campus of the Ottawa Hospital.

A gloved hand holds a petri dish with clear liquid while a pipette hovers above, releasing a drop. Laboratory glassware and reflections are visible in the background.

Services

We test for bacterial and fungal infections and offer some testing to diagnose and prevent viral infections, especially for transplant patients.

The lab also supports undergraduate and postgraduate medical and health science students from the University of Ottawa.  Medical laboratory technologists from and local colleges, including St. Lawrence College, can complete their training here.

We also take part in research to improve testing methods and better understand antibiotic resistance.

Team

Physicians and doctoral scientists with special training in diagnostic microbiology, lab technologists and technicians work together to provide accurate results and support patient care.
