Tinnitus and Decreased Sound Tolerance Management Clinic

Overview

The Tinnitus and Decreased Sound Tolerance Management Clinic at The Ottawa Hospital provides support for people experiencing persistent tinnitus or sensitivity to sound.

Tinnitus may present as ringing, buzzing, clicking or whistling in the ears or head. The clinic is not diagnostic but focuses on helping patients manage symptoms and improve quality of life. Care is provided through a collaborative approach between Audiology and Otolaryngology.

A person in a white coat examines an older adult’s ear with an otoscope in a medical office, while another healthcare worker is visible in the background.

Services

During your first visit, an audiologist will perform a hearing test and a tinnitus evaluation. This includes assessing how the tinnitus sounds and how it affects your daily life. Based on your needs, we offer:

Sound therapy

Uses soft, neutral sounds to help reduce the impact of tinnitus. The sound may be used for “masking relief” or it may often be used in the context of Tinnitus Retraining Therapy. We may recommend hearing aids if there is hearing loss.

Tinnitus Retraining Therapy (TRT)

Combines sound therapy with education to help you better understand and manage tinnitus.

Referrals to other professionals

If needed, the audiologist may refer you to other specialists for additional support.

Referrals

We accept patients with moderate to severe tinnitus or decreased sound tolerance that has already been medically investigated and diagnosed. Referrals must come from:

  • Otolaryngology (ENT)
  • Neurology or Neurosurgery
  • Physiatry (for head injury or concussion)
