Who we are:

The Ottawa Hospital Hematology-Oncology Program provides care to patients with cancers of the lymph glands, blood, or bone marrow.  A multidisciplinary team can provide you with expert care and management in both the inpatient and outpatient setting.

Our Services:

Throughout your treatment journey you will meet many teams of health-care providers committed to ensuring you receive the most compassionate and highest quality care possible.  These teams include:

  • Module L – an ambulatory care clinic located on the second floor of the Ottawa Hospital General Campus. Module L offers various clinics that meet your needs at each phase of the transplant process.
  • Medical Day Care Unit (MDCU) – an outpatient treatment unit located in room 5333 on the 5th floor of the Ottawa Hospital General Campus. MDCU provides care to many patients with varying needs including bone marrow transplant patients at different stages of treatment.
  • BMT Day Hospital Program – located on the 5th floor of the Ottawa Hospital Genera Campus. This program allows us to provide you with care while you undergo the transplant phase of treatment.  The unit is open from 0730h to 1930h and allows you to come in for daily treatment and assessment and then return home to your family or caregiver.  As a day hospital patient, physician coverage is available to you 365 days a year, 24 hours a day.
  • 5 West – an inpatient unit located on the 5th floor of the Ottawa Hospital General Campus. We specialize in the care of leukemia and bone marrow transplant patients. To ensure your care needs and standards of infection control are met, your stay you will be in a private room. To ensure your safety and the safety of our other patients, visiting hours on 5 west differ from the standard hospital visiting hours. Your care team will review this with you and your family on admission.
  • 6 South-West – an inpatient unit located on the 6th floor of the Ottawa Hospital General Campus. We specialize in the care of hematology-oncology patients.  You may be admitted for treatment, or for the management of treatment or disease-related symptoms.

Our Team:

We offer an interdisciplinary team approach. Our team includes: Registered Nurses, Hematologists, Advanced Practice Nurses, Clinical Associates, Clinical Pharmacists, Dieticians, Physiotherapists, Occupational Therapists and Social Workers.

lindahamelinBMT Program, Advance Practice Nurse:

Linda Hamelin, BScN, MN: Linda is a Registered Nurse who has a Master’s degree and extensive BMT clinical knowledge.  As the APN, Linda works closely with the attending physician and other BMT team members to provide care to our patients throughout the transplant process.  The APN is also responsible for coordinating complex treatment plans and preparing protocols.

Kate Duke (Clinical Manager) and Kate Oram (Clinical Care Leader): Kate and Kate are registered nurses who oversee the day-to-day operations of the inpatient and outpatient units. They work very closely with the entire BMT team to ensure things are running smoothly and that you receive the best care possible. They are excellent resources if you have any concerns.  Their offices are located on 5 West.

Clinical Manager and Clinical Care Leader 6 South-West:

Deborah Marshall (Clinical Manager) and Maura Eleuterio (Clinical Care Leader):  Deb and Maura are registered nurses who oversee the day-to-day operations of 6 South-West.  They are nurses in administrative roles who work very closely with the entire hematology team to ensure you receive the best care possible.   They are excellent resources if you have any concerns.  Their offices are located on 6 South-West.

Dr. Christopher Bredeson, MD, MSc, FRCPC

Dr. Christopher Bredeson received a medical degree from the University of Ottawa. His post-doctorate training included an internship and residency in internal medicine at The Ottawa Hospital, as well as a residency in clinical hematology and a fellowship in the Leukemia/Bone Marrow Transplant Program at the University of British Columbia in Vancouver. He holds a Master’s degree in Clinical Epidemiology also from the University of Ottawa. After a decade at the Medical College of Wisconsin, Dr. Bredeson returned to Ottawa to run our BMT program at The Ottawa Hospital. His experience and expertise in the field of bone marrow transplantation helps us to ensure that you receive the most evidence-based treatment possible.
