Recycling and Composting
The Environmental Waste Management Program at The Ottawa Hospital has incorporated leading edge innovations for over 10 years, allowing the hospital to recycle 20% of its total waste. This course of action generates revenue and reduces operating costs each year. The hospital has addressed each waste stream, and each year works towards diverting more waste from the landfill. Here are some of the projects we’ve implemented to reduce waste:
- Full recycling program (paper, plastic, metal, cardboard)
- Composting in the Civic Campus cafeteria and kitchen and the General Campus kitchen (coming soon to the Riverside Campus and General Campus cafeteria)
- Replacing Styrofoam food containers with biodegradable & paper items
- Recycling in the operating rooms (clean plastic and paper items)
- Confidential paper shredding and recycling
- Fluorescent lamp recycling
- Used cooking oil recycling
- Electronics recycling
- Surplus supply donation program
