Back to Top Social Work Student Placements - The Ottawa Hospital

Social Work PlacementAs an academic health sciences centre, The Ottawa Hospital (TOH) is committed to the instruction and training of students from clinical social work programs. Approximately 12-15 social work students are provided with field placements each year from universities across Canada and around the world. These placements provide opportunities for students training to become social workers in clinical practice to develop skills in social work intervention with individuals, families and groups. Because of the complexity of the health-care environment, placements are for students studying at the Masters of Social Work level. Only students studying in the faculty of Social Work at an accredited school will be considered for placement.

A variety of settings are available for students depending on their area of interest or their previous experience. Placement opportunities exist in Emergency, Surgery, Oncology, Psychiatry or Medicine as well as other areas of practice. Those areas available to students will vary each term based on field instructor availability.

Social Work students interested in completing their field placement at TOH should contact the Professional Practice Manager – Psychosocial Services, Geneviève Côté, by email at gcote@toh.ca or by telephone at 613-798-5555 ext. 14586 and be prepared to submit a copy of their resume. The Professional Practice Manager – Psychosocial Services will then refer potential candidates to the TOH Social Work Placement Coordinators for review.

Not all students interested in placements can be interviewed and accommodated each term. Considerable time is required to establish the best possible matches between students and field instructors, consequently significant advance time is required. The demand for placements is usually high therefore interested students are advised to indicate their interest in pursuing a placement at TOH as soon as possible.

We are very proud of our reputation of excellence with respect to the provision of training opportunities for social work students. Our students have found their placements at TOH to be exciting and rewarding experiences which have prepared them to practice in a clinical social work environment upon graduation.
