Therapeutic Recreation

Overview

Therapeutic Recreation recognizes that quality of life is vital to people who are experiencing major life changes due to illness or injury.

Recreation therapists at The Ottawa Hospital work with patients to explore their interests, set personal goals and take part in therapeutic programs that promote physical, emotional and social well-being. We strive to help people find new possibilities and discover ways to live a full and meaningful life.

Sometimes programs involve introducing new activities, and sometimes programs help people explore creative ways to enjoy familiar activities. All our programs are designed to promote a holistic approach to healing by meeting individual needs.

Activities may be creative, physical or social in nature, and encourage participation, build confidence and support recovery.

Goals of therapeutic recreation

To provide constructive, enjoyable and creative leisure activities

To promote an atmosphere conducive to mental and physical recovery

To improve morale and create a sense of well-being and interest in life

To support development of healthy social relationships and a feeling of acceptance

To foster acceptance of disabilities

To help build a positive attitude about existing strengths and abilities

Eligibility

Therapeutic recreation services are offered to patients of the OnTrack: First Episode Psychosis Program and to patients of The Ottawa Hospital Rehabilitation Centre.

If you meet these criteria and think therapeutic recreation would benefit you or a loved one, please talk to your health-care team or physiatrist for more information.

Process

Once therapeutic recreation services are offered, patients can expect the following process:

Assessment

Recreation Therapists assess each patient to understand their strengths, needs and interests. This helps set priorities and goals for leisure activities. Based on the assessment, the therapist creates a personalized intervention plan and tracks progress throughout treatment.

Education

Therapists educate patients about the benefits of leisure and recreation. They share information about community programs, activities and services, including what skills are needed, what equipment is used and what costs may be involved. This helps patients make informed choices about how they want to participate.

Participation

Patients can take part in a variety of recreation programs, offered one-on-one or in groups. These activities support physical, emotional and social well-being. Programs may include in-house events, seasonal celebrations, community outings and special events. Each activity is designed to meet the unique needs and interests of the participants.
