Overview
The Neuroscience Observation Area (NOA) is a step-down unit for patients with neurological conditions.
This 12-bed unit is for patients who need closer monitoring than what is provided on regular neuroscience units.
Designated family member
Frequent phone calls take time away from patient care. Therefore one family member will be designated to receive updates about a patient and can share information with others.
Patient phone
We have one patient phone that can be connected at a patient’s bedside. If you call the NOA, we can set up the phone and transfer your call.
Information for visitors
Because this is a specialized unit, these visiting guidelines take precedence over The Ottawa Hospital’s visiting guidelines.
Visiting hours
Family and friends play an important role in recovery, but rest is essential for healing, especially for patients with brain injuries. Please respect visiting hours and avoid visiting during shift changes or outside these times to protect patient confidentiality.
Visiting is welcome during these times:
10 a.m. to 1:30 p.m.
3 to 6 p.m.
8 to 9:30 p.m.
These hours allow nurses and doctors to provide care and complete assessments.
Visiting restrictions
- Please be aware that only two visitors are allowed in the NOA at a time. Others may wait in the family waiting room.
- Please keep visits short so that others may also visit their loved ones during visiting hours.
- Please do not wait outside the patient’s room.
- Please do not bring balloons or flowers to the NOA.
- Please note that The Ottawa Hospital is a scent-free. Scented products are not permitted and visitors wearing scented products may be asked to leave.
Bringing children to a visit
Please speak with your nurse before bringing children to the NOA as the environment can be frightening. Keep in mind that children are also more vulnerable to infections common in hospitals.
