{"id":78086,"date":"2023-07-17T16:16:50","date_gmt":"2023-07-17T20:16:50","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.ottawahospital.on.ca\/?p=78086"},"modified":"2023-07-27T16:18:27","modified_gmt":"2023-07-27T20:18:27","slug":"nursing-graduate-receives-ceremonial-pin-from-her-mentor","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.ottawahospital.on.ca\/en\/healthy-tomorrows\/nursing-graduate-receives-ceremonial-pin-from-her-mentor\/","title":{"rendered":"Nursing graduate receives ceremonial pin from her mentor"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>The \u201cpinning\u201d ceremony is a special event for every nurse. &nbsp;It\u2019s a time to celebrate a nursing student\u2019s accomplishments and to officially mark their transition into the profession.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Pinning is a tradition that may date back to the 12<sup>th<\/sup> century, but was popularized in the 1800s by Florence Nightingale, the founder of modern nursing, when she presented medals of excellence to graduates of her nursing school.<\/p>\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image is-style-default\">\n<figure class=\"aligncenter size-large is-resized\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.ottawahospital.on.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/07\/The_Ottawa_Hospital_Nursing_Pin-1022x1024.jpg\" alt=\"Pin awarded to nurse graduates\" class=\"wp-image-78089\" width=\"511\" height=\"512\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.ottawahospital.on.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/07\/The_Ottawa_Hospital_Nursing_Pin-1022x1024.jpg 1022w, https:\/\/www.ottawahospital.on.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/07\/The_Ottawa_Hospital_Nursing_Pin-300x300.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.ottawahospital.on.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/07\/The_Ottawa_Hospital_Nursing_Pin-100x100.jpg 100w, https:\/\/www.ottawahospital.on.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/07\/The_Ottawa_Hospital_Nursing_Pin-600x601.jpg 600w, https:\/\/www.ottawahospital.on.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/07\/The_Ottawa_Hospital_Nursing_Pin-150x150.jpg 150w, https:\/\/www.ottawahospital.on.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/07\/The_Ottawa_Hospital_Nursing_Pin-768x770.jpg 768w, https:\/\/www.ottawahospital.on.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/07\/The_Ottawa_Hospital_Nursing_Pin.jpg 1501w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 511px) 100vw, 511px\" \/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">Graduates of the Nursing Program at the University of Ottawa receive this pin, marking their official transition into the nursing profession.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n\n\n<div style=\"height:20px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p>And to receive the pin from a mentor is extra special.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Cassandra Thomas was a consolidation student from The University of Ottawa in the Surgical Day Care Unit at the Riverside campus of The Ottawa Hospital, and it didn\u2019t take long for her to make an impression.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cCassandra was particularly outstanding in that her knowledge, skill and motivation were clearly evident from the day she started until the very last day of her consolidation,\u201d said Heidi Easey-Dannehl, Nurse Educator at The Ottawa Hospital. \u201cShe instantly impressed our staff and built meaningful professional relationships within our entire surgical area.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Cassandra also felt a special connection with one colleague in particular.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cEvery so often, there is a perfect alignment between a mentor\u2019s teaching approach and a student\u2019s learning style,\u201d explains Heidi. \u201cThis was definitely the case between Eleni Georgitsos, a fellow nurse in the Surgical Day Care Unit and Cassandra.
