{"id":77411,"date":"2023-06-14T15:11:30","date_gmt":"2023-06-14T19:11:30","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.ottawahospital.on.ca\/?p=77411"},"modified":"2023-07-04T15:43:03","modified_gmt":"2023-07-04T19:43:03","slug":"a-land-acknowledgement-that-honours-the-land-and-the-medicines-it-provides","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.ottawahospital.on.ca\/en\/healthy-tomorrows\/a-land-acknowledgement-that-honours-the-land-and-the-medicines-it-provides\/","title":{"rendered":"A land acknowledgement that honours the land and the medicines it provides"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>Visitors to The Ottawa Hospital are now greeted by a prominent land acknowledgement, which has been installed by the main entrances at each of our three main campuses. &nbsp;It is paired with artwork by Simon Brascoup\u00e9 and his daughter, Mairi Brascoup\u00e9, both from Kitigan Zibi Anishinabeg. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The artwork depicts three medicinal plants that are still used today. The aesthetic is inspired by ancient Algonquin birchbark cut-outs which were used as templates for decorating birchbark baskets in vibrant colours that represent the four seasons.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The land acknowledgement installations are a visual reminder that The Ottawa Hospital is located on traditional and unceded Algonquin territory and of the traditional medicines the land provides. Acknowledging the land is part of The Ottawa Hospital\u2019s work of reconciliation and to foster welcoming spaces for First Nation, Inuit and M\u00e9tis patients and their families.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed is-type-video is-provider-youtube wp-block-embed-youtube wp-embed-aspect-16-9 wp-has-aspect-ratio\"><div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n<iframe title=\"A land acknowledgement that honours the land and the medicines it provides\" width=\"500\" height=\"281\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/JtHSlnclzVc?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe>\n<\/div><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\"><em>Watch as Simon and Mairi Brascoup\u00e9 describe what this project means to them, and how they hope their artwork will help create a culturally safe hospital for everyone.<\/em><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ottawahospital.on.ca\/en\/healthy-tomorrows\/original-artwork-by-simon-brascoupe-and-mairi-brascoupe-presented-at-the-land-acknowledgement-ceremony-for-the-new-civic-development\/\">The same artwork was installed in 2021<\/a> at the site of the new campus.
