This includes helping with mealtime setup, helping residents use technology, participating in recreational activities and providing companionship during a time when many residents\u2019 families are unable to visit.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>As an RSA in St. Patrick\u2019s long-term care home in Ottawa, Judie was dedicated to one resident and spent more than seven hours a day with her, five days a week.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cMy day-to-day is really spending time with my resident, keeping her active and out of other people\u2019s rooms. She has dementia, so my focus is on connecting with her, singing songs with her and trying to keep her calm and happy,\u201d explained Judie. \u201cIt\u2019s an important role because residents don\u2019t have the same kind of connection that they would have had prior to the pandemic, whether it was with other residents, or with one of the support workers \u2013 everything\u2019s different now.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\"><p>\u201cA lot of the individuals who have become RSAs saw what happened in the first wave of the pandemic and wanted to help in whatever way, shape or form they could.\u201d<\/p><\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Supporting long-term care homes with critical human resources<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image is-style-default\"><figure class=\"alignleft size-large is-resized\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.ottawahospital.on.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/07\/Andree_Kaspardlov_Assistant_Director_of_Workforce_Agility_The_Ottawa_Hospital.jpg\" alt=\"Andree Kaspardlov\" class=\"wp-image-67236\" width=\"236\" height=\"238\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.ottawahospital.on.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/07\/Andree_Kaspardlov_Assistant_Director_of_Workforce_Agility_The_Ottawa_Hospital.jpg 447w, https:\/\/www.ottawahospital.on.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/07\/Andree_Kaspardlov_Assistant_Director_of_Workforce_Agility_The_Ottawa_Hospital-100x100.jpg 100w, https:\/\/www.ottawahospital.on.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/07\/Andree_Kaspardlov_Assistant_Director_of_Workforce_Agility_The_Ottawa_Hospital-298x300.jpg 298w, https:\/\/www.ottawahospital.on.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/07\/Andree_Kaspardlov_Assistant_Director_of_Workforce_Agility_The_Ottawa_Hospital-150x150.jpg 150w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 236px) 100vw, 236px\" \/><figcaption><em>As the HR manager lead of the OWRSS program, Andree Kaspardlov is helping alleviate the administrative burden on long-term care homes by coordinating the hiring of RSAs through The Ottawa Hospital.&nbsp;<\/em><\/figcaption><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p>Judie, and many others like her, have been able to explore new career paths in health care and provide critical support to residents in long-term care homes as RSAs thanks to the <a href=\"https:\/\/news.ontario.ca\/en\/release\/59108\/province-launching-recruitment-program-to-support-long-term-care-sector\">Ontario Workforce Reserve for Senior Support<\/a> (OWRSS) program.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The program, initiated by the Government of Ontario in November 2020, was designed to support long-term care homes experiencing staffing shortages that were exacerbated by the COVID-19 pandemic. The Ottawa Hospital joined the program as a partner agency and supports and oversees hiring, training and deploying RSAs to participating long-term care homes.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cAs a partner agency, we take away the administrative burden from the homes so they can focus on care, while still getting the critical human resources they need,\u201d said Andree Kaspardlov, a\/Director of Workforce Agility and HR lead of the OWRSS program at The Ottawa Hospital. \u201cThe Ottawa Hospital joined as a partner because we saw the pandemic\u2019s impact on long-term care homes first-hand, having deployed many of our own staff there to help during the first wave, and we knew this was a way we could continue to support them.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Anyone over 18 can <a href=\"https:\/\/healthcloudtrialmaster-15a4d-17117fe91a8.force.com\/matchingportal\/s\/?language=en_US\">apply to become an RSA<\/a>, but recruitment for the program is targeted towards students and those who have been displaced from their job during the pandemic. One of the goals is to help them re-enter the workforce and make a difference in the community.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cA lot of the individuals who have become RSAs saw what happened in the first wave of the pandemic and wanted to help in whatever way, shape or form they could,\u201d said Andree.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\"><p>\u201cThe program has been a great success in Ottawa because we\u2019ve taken the time to understand what each home needs and tailor the RSA role to them.\u201d<\/p><\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Sending RSAs where they\u2019re needed most<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image is-style-default\"><figure class=\"alignright size-large is-resized\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.ottawahospital.on.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/07\/Marney_Cooper_Clinical_Operations_Manager_OWRSS_at_The_Ottawa_Hospital-768x1024.jpg\" alt=\"Marney Cooper\" class=\"wp-image-67240\" width=\"203\" height=\"270\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.ottawahospital.on.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/07\/Marney_Cooper_Clinical_Operations_Manager_OWRSS_at_The_Ottawa_Hospital-768x1024.jpg 768w, https:\/\/www.ottawahospital.on.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/07\/Marney_Cooper_Clinical_Operations_Manager_OWRSS_at_The_Ottawa_Hospital-600x800.jpg 600w, https:\/\/www.ottawahospital.on.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/07\/Marney_Cooper_Clinical_Operations_Manager_OWRSS_at_The_Ottawa_Hospital-225x300.jpg 225w, https:\/\/www.ottawahospital.on.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/07\/Marney_Cooper_Clinical_Operations_Manager_OWRSS_at_The_Ottawa_Hospital-1152x1536.jpg 1152w, https:\/\/www.ottawahospital.on.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/07\/Marney_Cooper_Clinical_Operations_Manager_OWRSS_at_The_Ottawa_Hospital.jpg 1440w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 203px) 100vw, 203px\" \/><figcaption><em>Marnie Cooper, clinical operations manager for the OWRSS program at The Ottawa Hospital, helps make sure RSAs have the skills to meet the needs of the long-term care home they support.<\/em><\/figcaption><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p>After 15 hours of online training and The Ottawa Hospital\u2019s corporate orientation, RSAs are ready to be deployed to long-term care homes throughout the city.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>To make sure RSAs are deployed where they\u2019re needed most, Marney Cooper, former geriatric nurse specialist and the clinical operations manager of the OWRSS program at The Ottawa Hospital, has in-depth discussions with the participating long-term care homes to learn about their specific needs.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cThe program has been a great success in Ottawa because we\u2019ve taken the time to understand what each home needs and tailor the RSA role to them,\u201d said Marney.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>As of May 2021, The Ottawa Hospital has hired more than 120 RSAs and recruited six long-term care homes to the program \u2013 with others being actively onboarded. Recently, the hospital reached a new milestone having deployed 75 RSA\u2019s to long-term care homes.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The hospital is currently developing a plan to expand the program to rural communities in the Champlain region where smaller long-term care homes need extra support.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Feedback from participating long-term care homes has been overwhelmingly positive, said Marney. &nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\"><p>\u201cWhen I walked in, my resident jumped up and down. I knew that she was happy to see me and that made me very grateful to have had the opportunity to work with her.\u201d<\/p><\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cThe way staff in the homes explained it to me was, \u2018It\u2019s been a difficult year, and we\u2019ve all been running at a pace that is just unbelievably too fast. Having the RSAs, who are so kind to the residents, gives us an opportunity to breathe and really do a great job,\u2019\u201d explained Marney.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">\u201cNow I have a purpose\u201d<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>For two months, Judie saw first-hand the significant impact RSAs can have on residents in long-term care homes.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cWhen I walked in, my resident jumped up and down. I knew that she was happy to see me and that made me very grateful to have had the opportunity to work with her,\u201d said Judie. \u201cAccording to her family, she\u2019s happier than she was before the pandemic.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>While Judie is no longer part of the program, being an RSA had a profound effect on her life.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cIt was a good path, from dealing with the passing of both my parents during the pandemic to being able to see residents happy in these homes,\u201d said Judie. \u201cIt helped with so many things that I was having issues with because I had a purpose.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Expanding the impact of RSAs<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>With the program well underway, The Ottawa Hospital is now looking at ways to help RSAs have an even bigger impact on residents of long-term care homes throughout the region.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The Ottawa Hospital is now providing some RSAs with additional training to support residents who are living with cognitive impairments. Gentle persuasive approaches training teaches RSAs de-escalation techniques and other practical skills to assist this population.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>RSAs with this training act as companions to residents who have just moved into a new home and are required to remain in isolation for 14 days, helping them transition to their new environment and routine.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>If you would like more information about the RSA program at The Ottawa Hospital please contact <a href=\"mailto:LTCResidentSupportAide@toh.ca\">LTCResidentSupportAide@toh.ca<\/a>.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Judie Wheeland became a Resident Support Aide in a long-term care home after caring for her elderly parents.
