Another is his ability to make almost\nanyone feel comfortable. This skill is particularly important for a porter, who\ntransports patients who may feel a bit uneasy from one part of the hospital to\nanother.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Phyllis\nHolmes, a former patient of The Ottawa Hospital wrote this about Mongeon in her\nnomination letter to The Ottawa Hospital\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/ohfoundation.ca\/tribute-gift\/guardian-angel-program\/\">Guardian\nAngel Program<\/a>, a recognition\nprogram where patients and families can show their appreciation for doctors,\nnurses, staff and volunteers who provide exceptional care:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><em>&#8220;Before Mike took me down for my<\/em> <em>echocardiogram,\nhe stopped just past the nursing station and went and got 2<\/em> <em>warm blankets\nbecause he thought I was going to get cold before we returned.<\/em> <em>[My husband, Brian,]\nand he had a very animated conversation.&#8221; <\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In\naddition to the nomination, Phyllis made a donation to the hospital in\nMongeon\u2019s honour to show her appreciation for his kindness.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Mongeon\nhas been a porter at The Ottawa Hospital for 12 years, but he has been making\npeople laugh and feel at ease his entire life. His energetic and spirited\npersonality supports patients who experience the unfamiliar sights and sounds\nof the hospital. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\"><p>\u201cWhen you love your job, it puts a smile on your face. And a smile is contagious,\u201d boasts Mongeon. <\/p><\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<p>Mongeon\nhas a long-term impact on patients. Former patients often greet him by name.\nThey ask if he remembers their time together from years ago. They share jokes\nor stories of Mongeon\u2019s compassionate deeds that made them feel a little warmer\nor more comfortable during their hospital stay.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>It\nmay take a moment or two, but Mongeon remembers these patient stories in the\nend. He treats every patient that he transports the same way: he smiles widely,\nintroduces himself, and offers warm jokes, conversation, or the gentle care\nrequired to get them on their way. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In\nfact, he is so popular that patients often ask for him to transport them again.\n<em><\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The\nOttawa Hospital\u2019s Guardian Angel Program is a\nthoughtful way for patients to honour&nbsp;a doctor, nurse, staff member or\nvolunteer who made a positive impact on their experience. By giving a gift and\nsending a message, patients let the recipient know that the special care given\ndid not go unnoticed. The recipient also receives a custom-crafted Guardian Angel\npin to proudly wear on their lapel, signifying to others that they deliver compassionate\ncare to patients at The Ottawa Hospital.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Donations\nthrough the&nbsp;Guardian Angel Program&nbsp;help to purchase life-saving\nequipment, enhance patient care areas, and fund vital medical research that\nwill lead to new treatments and cures.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Congratulations\nand thank you for your dedication to every patient, Mike!<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Michel \u201cMike\u201d Mongeon has been a porter at The Ottawa Hospital for 12 years, but he has been making people laugh and feel at ease his entire life.
