New murals created by youth with epilepsy will create a welcoming environment for people visiting The Ottawa Hospital\u2019s Neuroscience Clinic<\/em><\/p>\n

OTTAWA \u2013 Feb. 21, 2019 \u2013<\/strong> Epilepsy Ottawa and Eisai Limited teamed up with The Ottawa Hospital and CHEO to help youth living with epilepsy transition into adult care through artwork. Two new murals will create a warm, welcoming environment for people visiting The Ottawa Hospital Neuroscience Clinic. Youth with epilepsy, and their families, created the murals together with the team of health-care professionals who will provide their care going forward.<\/p>\n

In September 2018, Epilepsy Ottawa hosted an event called Painting in the Park, sponsored by Eisai Limited. Young people and their families were invited to Andrew Haydon Park to paint murals from the Foundation of Hospital Art. The event helped youth who are transitioning from CHEO\u2019s pediatric epilepsy program to The Ottawa Hospital\u2019s adult program by introducing them to their new patient care teams and their local community support agency in a positive, non-medical environment.<\/p>\n

\u201cMany young patients who transition from care at CHEO to The Ottawa Hospital often struggle with the difference in environment,\u201d said Dr. Tadeu Fantaneanu, Director of the epilepsy program at The Ottawa Hospital. \u201cArtwork like this will make these young patients feel a little more at home, and help them transition into the next chapter of their care.\u201d<\/p>\n

Epilepsy Ottawa and Eisai Limited donated the two murals, which will be housed in the Neuroscience Clinic waiting room at The Ottawa Hospital\u2019s Civic Campus, helping those new to the hospital\u2019s epilepsy program feel a little more comfortable in their new care environment.<\/p>\n

\u201cIn creating this mural together, patients were introduced to the people who will be caring for them going forward,\u201d said Nikki Porter, Executive Director, Epilepsy Ottawa. \u201cWe wanted this introduction to happen outside hospital walls, so that patients and their care providers could get to know each other in a social environment. This could help set the stage for the patient and care provider relationships going forward.\u201d<\/p>\n
