{"id":3921,"date":"2016-07-06T14:11:30","date_gmt":"2016-07-06T18:11:30","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/52.229.122.34\/en\/?p=3921"},"modified":"2021-02-17T11:11:21","modified_gmt":"2021-02-17T16:11:21","slug":"chair-exercise-video-gets-patients-moving","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.ottawahospital.on.ca\/en\/uncategorized\/chair-exercise-video-gets-patients-moving\/","title":{"rendered":"Chair exercise video gets patients moving"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"text-center\"><em>Physiotherapists, led by Mary Haller, developed the \u201cMove and Improve\u201d video that helps increase older patients\u2019 daily physical activity, to reduce the effects of deconditioning while in hospital.<\/em><\/p>\n<p>A patient on the A1 Geriatric Unit watches the chair exercise video on an iPad and follows the movements&nbsp; \u2013 slowly stretching, raising her arms and lifting her legs.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cPatients tell us the exercises are easy to follow, that they like having volunteers to help them, and that they like the idea of using new technology,\u201d said Physiotherapist Mary Haller, who led the video\u2019s development along with The Ottawa Hospital\u2019s Physiotherapy Best Practices committee.<\/p>\n<p>The \u201cMove and Improve\u201d chair exercise video is aimed at boosting older inpatients\u2019 daily physical activity to reduce the effects of deconditioning while in hospital.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIncreasing their daily mobility helps reduce the risk of muscle atrophy and loss of independence,\u201d said Haller. \u201cIn turn, this may help shorten length of stay and reduce patients\u2019 functional decline.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Screened patients on certain units are asked if they want to do the chair exercises. If so, a volunteer sits at the patient\u2019s bedside and runs the video on an iPad. The video can also be used outside the hospital, especially by older adults with mobility challenges who are housebound and people in assisted living or in long-term care homes.<\/p>\n<p>Health-care providers can access the video and its accompanying screening tools on the <a href=\"https:\/\/rgpeo.com\/en\/health-care-practitioners\/falls-prevention-program\/move-and-improve.aspx\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Regional Geriatric Program of Eastern Ontario\u2019s website.<\/a><\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe video is just another example of how our physiotherapy staff makes a difference to our patients\u2019 well-being,\u201d said Physiotherapist Dana Guest. \u201cWe play a significant role in health promotion and treating injury and disease.
