But a clinical trial at The Ottawa Hospital is testing the idea that certain stem cells may also be able to help control the body\u2019s immune system to reduce injury, promote healing, and fight infection.<\/p>\n<p>Charles Berniqu\u00e9, 73, of Hawkesbury, Ontario, recently participated in this trial and survived a deadly infection.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt is tremendous what The Ottawa Hospital did for me,\u201d said Berniqu\u00e9. \u201cI was so close to death, but I received the best care in the world and got to participate in this study, which could help many people.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Berniqu\u00e9 developed an infection in June 2015 after his esophagus burst, possibly due to a severe case of food poisoning. This led to severe septic shock, a deadly condition that occurs when an uncontrolled infection results in hyper-activation of the immune system, causing the cardiovascular system and other organs to fail.<\/p>\n<p>Berniqu\u00e9 was in a coma in The Ottawa Hospital\u2019s intensive care unit when his wife, Maureen, consented to his participation in the clinical trial.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI just wanted to do whatever I could to help him,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-3858 size-full img-responsive\" src=\"\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/11\/YIMC_Stemcells_April20McIntyreStewart_lab.jpg\" alt=\"stemcells_april20mcintyrestewart_lab\" width=\"740\" height=\"341\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.ottawahospital.on.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/11\/YIMC_Stemcells_April20McIntyreStewart_lab.jpg 740w, https:\/\/www.ottawahospital.on.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/11\/YIMC_Stemcells_April20McIntyreStewart_lab-600x276.jpg 600w, https:\/\/www.ottawahospital.on.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/11\/YIMC_Stemcells_April20McIntyreStewart_lab-300x138.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 740px) 100vw, 740px\" \/><\/p>\n<p class=\"text-center\"><em>Dr. Lauralyn McIntyre (right) is leading the clinical trial, which is based upon years of research conducted with Dr. Duncan Stewart (left), Executive Vice-President of Research at The Ottawa Hospital and professor at the University of Ottawa.<\/em><\/p>\n<p>Within 24 hours, Berniqu\u00e9 received an intravenous infusion of 30 million stem cells derived from the bone marrow of a healthy Ottawa volunteer.<\/p>\n<p>Berniqu\u00e9 battled back and, despite a number of complications from the massive infection, he slowly recovered.
