{"id":28738,"date":"2017-07-26T10:23:11","date_gmt":"2017-07-26T14:23:11","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.ottawahospital.on.ca\/?p=28738\/"},"modified":"2020-09-25T15:30:29","modified_gmt":"2020-09-25T19:30:29","slug":"patient-tracking-board-eases-family-worries","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.ottawahospital.on.ca\/en\/healthy-tomorrows\/patient-tracking-board-eases-family-worries\/","title":{"rendered":"Patient Tracking Board eases family worries"},"content":{"rendered":"<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><em>Barb Harwood-Gendron worried about her mother while she was in surgery, but she worried less when she could follow her mother\u2019s progress on the new Patient Tracking Board.<\/em><\/p>\n<p>Barb Harwood-Gendron worried less when she could follow her mother\u2019s progress through surgery, and know once she got to the recovery room, on the new Patient Tracking Board installed in the Surgical Suite Family Lounge at the Civic Campus.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt gave me an idea of where she was, without them having to run out and tell me,\u201d said Harwood-Gendron. \u201cI would have been sitting worrying. It doesn\u2019t eliminate it, but it subsides.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The new boards were installed in the spring at the General, Civic and Riverside campuses, and allow family and friends to get updates, such as when the anesthesic started, when the procedure started, when the patient arrived in the Post-Anesthetic Care Unit (PACU) and was discharged.<\/p>\n<p>Patient privacy is preserved because the board shows only the patient tracking number that\u2019s given to family members. So far, the boards are for surgical day care and same-day admission patients only. Emergency and inpatients will be added during Phase 2.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter img-responsive\" src=\"\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/07\/J-June-Family-Board-SnipImage-WEB-LG_web.jpg\" alt=\"Family Board Snip Image\" width=\"500\" height=\"217\"><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><em>Family members waiting in the lounge can see on the Patient Tracking Board when the anesthesic started, when the procedure started, when the patient arrived in the Post-Anesthetic Care Unit (PACU) and was discharged.<\/em><\/p>\n<p>Joanna Schubert, Clinical Manager, said staff had been considering the idea for a while, and then a grateful patient donated the funds, through <a href=\"https:\/\/ohfoundation.ca\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">The Ottawa Hospital Foundation<\/a>, that allowed the boards to be developed. Jules Sigler was so impressed by the excellent care he received, that he wanted to show his appreciation in a meaningful way for both patients and staff.<\/p>\n<p>As well as families, nurses in PACU like the boards, and \u201cfound they have enhanced the patient experience as they are now aware that their families can digitally follow them,\u201d said Charles Mann, Clinical Care Leader for PACU and the Surgical Day Care Unit at the Civic Campus.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cA few family members have said they like to watch the progress of their loved one through their surgery day,\u201d said RN Stephanie Wood, who works in the PACU. \u201cIt has given back some control to family members who are going through this stressful time. And, it has decreased the number of calls to our clerk regarding \u2018Is my family member out of surgery yet?\u2019\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cOne nurse overheard a family member on the phone saying \u2018No need to come in. They have this great tracking board that\u2019s awesome. I\u2019ll call you when the surgery is done\u2019,\u201d said Schubert.<\/p>\n<p>Family members can find out more about the boards on campus-specific information sheets that answer frequently asked questions.
