Our community\u2019s senior population is growing. Now more than ever, caring for them is truly a team effort.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

You might even say it takes a village.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Ottawa Hospital has partnered with Schlegel Villages for The Village of Riverbank Terrace, a 256-bed long-term care home currently under construction at our Riverside Campus. This new partnership will alleviate wait times for long-term care, free up capacity in hospitals and provide residents with a living space where they can lead lives of meaning and purpose.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Fulfilling a growing need<\/h3>\n\n\n\n

\u201cThere\u2019s a substantial wait list for different types of long-term care in our region,\u201d says Joanne Read, Executive Vice-President and Chief Planning & Development Officer at The Ottawa Hospital. \u201cThis home is going to help us fulfill the growing needs of the Ottawa community.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Village of Riverbank Terrace will offer a specialized focus on mental health and complex physical needs while creating a supportive space for residents living with dementia.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cFor patients in hospital who no longer require acute care but who still require ongoing specialized care, returning to their own home may not be an option,\u201d explains Karen Stockton, Executive Director of Planning at The Ottawa Hospital. \u201cContinued investment in long-term care gives more patients the opportunity to transition to homes like The Village of Riverbank Terrace, where their complex care needs can be met for longer stays. Expanding long-term care capacity also helps reduce wait times and improves patient flow in hospitals, ultimately improving access to care for everyone.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Village of Riverbank Terrace will be expanded in the coming years to include an attached 270-suite retirement residence, also to be built and managed by Schlegel Villages. This second development phase will also introduce a Town Square \u2014 a hallmark of the Schlegel Villages design \u2014 which will offer amenities such as dining, lounge and activity spaces for residents and visitors. And after our new campus opens its doors, Schlegel Villages will begin construction on a larger, 320-bed long-term care home at our existing Civic Campus.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cFor more than 70 years, the Schlegel family has managed long-term care and retirement communities across our province, creating places where elders can live a life of meaning and purpose. Today, more than 5,000 residents across 18 locations call Schlegel Villages home,\u201d says James Schlegel, President and CEO of Schlegel Villages. \u201cEach new Village we design and build is enhanced by the experience we\u2019ve gained from Villages we currently operate. Our belief in relationship as the foundation of care and support, however, doesn\u2019t change, and it\u2019s an honour to bring our Village concept and our philosophy of care to Ottawa.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Placement in any long-term care home in the province is coordinated through Ontario Health atHome. The Village of Riverbank Terrace is expected to open in the spring of 2027, and the wait list for placement will likely open three to four months prior to a confirmed opening date.
