June 26, 2014\u00a0\u2014 <\/strong>At the recent SOGC Annual Clinical Scientific Conference in Niagara Falls, Ontario, Dr. Amanda Black was awarded with the Regional Achievement Award for the Ontario region in recognition for her leadership in women\u2019s health.<\/p>\n

Dr. Black is an associate professor in obstetrics and gynaecology at the University of Ottawa and works at the Ottawa Hospital and the Children\u2019s Hospital of Eastern Ontario. She received her medical degree from the University of Western Ontario and completed her residency in obstetrics and gynaecology at the University of Ottawa. She completed a fellowship in contraception and pediatric gynaecology at Queen\u2019s University and a masters of public health at Johns Hopkins University.<\/p>\n

Dr. Black has been an active member of the SOGC throughout her career. She contributed significantly to the development of the SOGC website\u00a0 https:\/\/www.sexualityandu.ca\/<\/a>and frequently responds to SOGC media requests on the topic of female sexual health. Currently, she is chair of the SOGC\u2019s national contraception awareness program and the Canadian contraception consensus committee.<\/p>\n

Dr. Black has been involved in a number of educational initiatives in the area of contraception and sexual health, including the development of counselling aids for office practice and the development of contraception modules and workshops for physicians and residents.<\/p>\n

Dr. Black is a recognized expert in her field and is a passionate advocate for ensuring that all Canadian women, including adolescents, have access to a wide range of affordable contraceptive options. She has authored many national guidelines and has published extensively on the topics of contraception and pediatric and adolescent gynecology, including the landmark Canadian Contraception Study.<\/p>\n

The SOGC\u2019s Regional Awards recognize the excellence of members, and the outstanding contributions of those who volunteer their time to women\u2019s health at the local, regional, or provincial levels.<\/p>\n
