Compared to eight other Canadian teaching hospitals that form TOH’s peer group, patients at our facility have a higher life expectancy and a lower rate of avoidable deaths. This indicator is reflected in the hospital standardized mortality ratio of 87, which places us fourth among the country’s nine largest teaching hospitals.

In addition, TOH ranks second among the country’s nine largest teaching hospitals for having a lower-than-average rate of patients (9.2 percent) who are readmitted within 30 days of being discharged. However, we are monitoring the quality of our discharge planning and transitional care for discharged patients given that TOH’s readmission rate is increasing higher than the national average for all hospitals.

Because TOH’s guiding principle is to provide the best quality care at the lowest cost, we recognize that efficiency is an area that requires improvement. With an average cost per hospital stay of $6,130, TOH ranks seventh among the country’s nine largest teaching hospitals in treating the average patient occupying an acute-care bed in a cost-efficient way. This ranking suggests there are opportunities to review the costs associated with administrative overhead and ensure they are in line with those of our peer hospitals.

As we continue the process of building a high-performing hospital, The Ottawa Hospital will continue to track quality and performance, with the patient’s needs at the centre of all that we do.

Media Contact:
Hazel Harding
Communications Advisor
Email: hharding@toh.on.ca
Tel.: 613-737-8460

November 7, 2013 — The Ottawa Hospital performs well among the country’s teaching hospitals in treating patients safely and effectively, according to newly released data from the Canadian Institute for Health Information (CIHI).
