The expert review was triggered by TOH concerns about persistently high rates of <em>Clostridium difficile<\/em>, a health-care associated bacterial infection.<br \/>\n<strong>\u00a0<\/strong><br \/>\nThe expert panel visited The Ottawa Hospital\u2019s General Campus on September 27, 2012. The members of the panel toured the facility and conducted interviews with hospital staff. They also reviewed TOH\u2019s standards and practices for hand hygiene, environmental cleaning, logistics and antimicrobial stewardship.<br \/>\n<strong>\u00a0<\/strong><br \/>\nOn October 30, 2012, the panel produced a written report that included recommendations for action. We are committed to being a hospital that is open and willing to address safety concerns. In the coming months, strategies to reduce <em>C. difficile<\/em> rates at TOH will focus on six key actions:<\/p>\n<ol>\n<li>Ensure prompt diagnosis and appropriate management of patients who may have the <em>C. difficile<\/em> infection<\/li>\n<li>Reduce clutter on inpatient units<\/li>\n<li>\u00a0Improve hand-hygiene compliance<\/li>\n<li>Ensure a high standard of cleaning and disinfection<\/li>\n<li>Ensure the appropriate and careful use of antibiotics<\/li>\n<li>Increase awareness of infection control and prevention methods among staff, patients, families and the community<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<div class=\"table-responsive\">\n<table class=\"table-bordered table\" style=\"background-color: #d0dae8;\">\n<tbody>\n<tr>\n<td>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><strong>Five ways hospital patients can help prevent C. difficile infections:<\/strong><\/p>\n<ol style=\"text-align: center;\">\n<li>Take antibiotics only as prescribed by your doctor. Ask why you are taking them if you do not know.<\/li>\n<li>If you develop diarrhea, tell your doctor.
